Chapter Twenty

That almost sounds like an insult, Zero replied.

Before Red could reply, Mira clapped her hands. “Pay attention. You two can talk later.”

Once she seemed sure they were paying attention, she continued, “For now, all we know is that you’re an exceptionally good fit for weapon spirits; you can act as a concentrated source of Essence for them, even passively. But that is about everything we know, related to you. You are a true enigma,” Mira concluded.

Mira stared at him for a few seconds, as if she expected some sort of a reaction. Getting none, she coughed, before continuing, “That’s about it. However, there is still one more thing I’d like to ask you. I’m able to enchant your blade with some minor enhancements, and these can be replaced at a later time. With your blade’s Bronze Attunement, I could only do a minor attribute boost, and it wouldn’t affect its actual aura.”

What do you think? Zero asked Red.

No, Red responded immediately.

“No thanks,” Zero rejected.

“Are you sure?” she asked once more.

“Yes,” Zero replied and stood up from his chair.

Red turned inward now that the lecture was over. Staring up at the cosmic orbs amidst the perpetually starry sky, he looked around at the rest of his inner palace—he was still unsure whether it could be called that.

The fountain continued to fill with the crimson liquid, but other than that, there was nothing else. The palatial throne its master sat upon was the only other thing in there.

Red standing and approaching the ledge of the inner palace, couldn't help but notice the strange and unusual surroundings. It looked up, its gaze drawn towards the starry sky that was not only above it, but all around. The stars twinkled brightly, as if they were within arm's reach, and yet there was no sense of depth or distance.

There was no world here, Red realized with a start. It was as if it was suspended in a void, surrounded by nothing but stars and darkness.

“Interesting,” it said, looking up at the orbs above. “What will this place look like when I reach Silver?”

Meandering over to the pool, it sat at the edge and stared at the liquid within, admiring the way the starry sky illuminated it. “Is this what restlessness feels like?”

The duel with Roland had only briefly subsided the battle lust that it craved, and even then, there was no true risk,no real excitement to be had. Their lives were never put on the line, and they never really had to struggle. Not that it wanted Zero to be in a life threatening situation. But even that strict monster had said that its master was special, so it’d be fine.

“There was no blood…” it muttered, frowning. “I might need to talk to the warrior.”

Zero stared at the translucent screen, tapping his finger on the table. It had been analyzing for redacted threads for a full minute.
